Pohořelec – Prague Loretto - Hradčanské Square – Praue Castle – St.Vitus Cathedral – Old Royal Palace – Golden Lane

The Pohořelec is the previous suburb of Hradčany, founded in 1375 by deputy burgrave Alš of Malkovice. The place was pursued by fires and the name results from this fact. In the middle of the square standing a rococo sculptural group of St Jan Nepomucký, work by Jan Antonín Quitainer from 1752. It was mounted there in 1846, after its replacement from Hradčany. The east side of Pohořelec is dominated with large corner Trčkovský house no. 110, a storied, late renaissance building from the half of 17th century. The building touches Loretánská Street with its northern wing and it touches Úvoz with its southern wing. Northern and southern sides of the square are formed by historical houses. In the southern frontage there is an entrance to stairs which lead to the Strahov monastery.

The Prague Loretto is an artistic and historical monument, as well as a Baroque pilgrimage site the renown of which in the city can perhaps be compared only with that of the wonder-working statue of the Infant of Prague. Construction of the Prague Loreto Santa Casa (illus. 9) began on 3 June 1626, at the instigation of Baroness Benigna Katharina von Lobkowitz. The Loreto arose gradually over the course of the 17 and 18 centuries; the interiors were partly renovated in the 19 century; and in the 1950s and 1960s, a new treasury was built, accessible to the public.

Hradčanské square, Prague Castle - Hradcanske square is located infront of input gate to the Prague castle. The square was settled already in 12th centenary, mostly occupied here by blacsmith ś shops. Later started to build here houses representative level of inhabitants who had been somehow bound with service on Prague castle. Prague Castle - was founded in around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Premyslid Dynasty. Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world, with an area of almost 70,000m². It consists of a large-scale composition of palaces and ecclesiastical buildings of various architectural styles, from Roman-style buildings from the 10th century through Gothic modifications in the 14th century.

St.Vitus Cathedral - St. Vitus Cathedral, as visitors can see it today, belongs among the most important Gothic buildings. It has a transversal wall, three towers, gallery and a ring of chapels behind a sacrarium. In 1344 the Chales IV. founded on the same place a Gothic cathedral. The Cathedral is the most beautiful church in Prague. In its history we find reflection of the beginnings of the Christian culture in Czech lands. It serves as a mausoleum of Czech kings and the corronation jewels are stored here as well. The cathedral started being built towards the end of the first millenium and was not finished until the beginning of the 20th century. Just very near you can see the Old Royal Plalace.

The Golden Lane – is located on the northern wall of the Castle. The area of the northern bailey was used for the building of modest dwellings, which are now the last memories of the small-scale architecture of Prague Castle. These small houses were inhabited by the castle servants, perhaps goldsmiths (the name "Golden Lane" is documented from the 16th century) and the castle marksmen. The tiny houses were occupied until World War II, but already during the period of the First Republic care was taken to ensure that the picturesque character of the lane was not changed in the course of modifications.
