Charles Square – New Town Hall - Vodičkova street – Wenceslas Square – Church of Virgin Mary Sněžná – Na Příkopě road – Prague´s Municipal House - Republiky Square


New Town Hall - The construction of the New Town Hall one of eighteen national cultural monuments in Prague begun shortly after the founding of Prague's New Town in l348. The emperor Charles IV. was pursuing a grand-scale prograrnme of town-planning in accordance with his conceptions of the future of the Holy Roman Empire which was expanding by that time with Prague as the capital. In 1419 the New Town Hall became the stage for the first arrned clash between the Catholics and Utraquists marking the beginning of the Hussite Revolution. A procession led by theHussite preacher Jan Želivský and Jan Žižka, came to a stop in front of the Town Hall and demanded the release of followers who had been imprisoned there. In 1456 saw the completion of the Town Hall's tower, which was later installed with bells, cast by Brikcí from Cimperk and a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Wenceslas.

Charles square - the biggest square in Prague located in the downtown, earlier given a name "cattle market". Part of the square is also trim park. This park has its origin form in 19th century when was original appearance "cattle market" modified. At that time people were selling cattle, pickled herrings, fire-wood and coal. Today is in the space of park several monuments. On the north side square you will find New Town Hall.

Wenceslas Square - the square was originally called "horsy market" and was designed already in 1348 at the same time with foundation of "New Town". These days the Wenceslas square is the most dominant square in Prague. It´s wide boulevard 681m long and 60m and leads from National Museum to the underground station Můstek. In the upper part is placed monument of St.Vaclav. In the middle part of the square leads to the Vodičkova street. The name of this street is given by Jan Vodička who was in 15th century welthy butcher here and by that time he owned the biggest house here, today called the house „U Nováků“.

Church of Virgin Mary Sněžná - with monastery was found 3. 9. 1347 by Charles IV., Czech king and Romish emperor. It should be remembrance of his coronation that is why the church has excel altitude and range above all Prague temples. Charles IV. presented the church to Carmelite ś order. Therefore this Gothic church should be biggest and highest and should occupy space of Jungmannovo square. Hussite wars however interrupted effort of builders and by the year 1397 they built up only high choir. The church has highest vault from all of the Prague ś churches, about 34 m.

Prague´s Municipal House - the Prague’s Municipal House stands right next to Prague Gate a unique fragment of Prague’s Old Town fortifications dating from the Gothic period and reminds the times when an important trade route arrived at this point. That was one of the reasons why king Wenceslas IV. decided in 14th century to establish his residence in this area beside the fortification walls. The residence was given the name King’s Court. Right from this place begins pedistrian zone NaPříkopě - earlier were here moats near barriers of the Old Town, then street, and then some time all sorts of Prague road and now is here pedistrian zone affect sporadically by transport.

Republiky Square - is located on the place of fortification ditch between Old and New town. Its surface arose roughly in today's form in 60´s years of 19th century when the Prague medieval rampart were torn down. Already at the turn of 12th and 13th century was local surface built - up here Romance church St.Benedikt. Big space in proximity medieval gist of the city ignited to build-up many significant buildings and houses at the turn of 19th and 20th century, for example Prague´s Municipal House.
