San Marino
Basic informations
In whatever part of this tiny territory you go, in particular at the peak of its mountain, your gaze is lost over a unique, dazzling panorama: the fertile soils of Emilia Romagna, the soft rolling hills of the Marche and Mentefeltro, and on to the placid Adriatic sea.
Perched on the top of a 657 m lump of rock, the 61-sq-km Repubblica di San Marino is Europe’s third-smallest sate after the Vatican and Monaco. A favorite day-trip destination – in 2006, about 2.1 million visitors made the very steep climb to the historic centre – it’s largely given over to tourism. Hundreds of souvenir stalls line the attractive streets selling everything from samurai swords to San Marino stamps and locally minted coins, and restaurants do a brisk trade feeding the visiting hordes. However, if you catch it at a quiet time (i.e. during the week, preferably in the winter) the old town is pleasant enough and the views are spectacular.
The tiny city holds a wealth of history, museums, and priceless architectural monuments, while a wealth of assorted crafts and souvenirs provide a vast, pleasant shopping experience.
